When you have your dog readied for traveling longer distances, you should also take the safeguards to make sure that their health will not become an issue throughout the ride. You should take them to your veterinarian so that you can get them vaccinated for a variety of diseases, like rabies (which you should always get for your dog anyway), lyme vaccine, and bordatella vaccine.

Additionally to getting your dog vaccinated, you should make sure that there are plenty of fluids and foods for your dog on the long trip. Make sure that you bring many bottles of water and also a bowl so that the dog can drink from it. Depending on the dog, some may not want to drink out of bottles and prefer to drink out of their bowls, should this is something that a dog owner should take a mental note of.

As well, make sure to keep the dog on the diet that they are currently on. When humans travel and eat things that they normally would not, then it's very likely that they will have some type of stomach problem. The same situation is very similar for dogs, or is possibly worst! If you have a dog brand food that the dog is use to eating then don't forget to bring it with you.

It's also a good idea to bring some extra just incase for emergency purposes. When a dog switch the brand name food that they are used to eating then it could cause them to have an upset stomach and vomit which could help make your trip very unpleasant.

Likewise, make a point to plan for the unexpected. Your dog can run off, and if you are in an unfamiliar territory. To increase the odds of finding your dog, have some kind of identification on the dog if they do decide to explore and wonder off. A valid and working microchip is a good medium for this, or some type of distinctive tag that you can easily identify.

Finally, make sure to bring some type of emergency kit. Not just for the dog, but for everyone elses, because anything can happen while traveling and it’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit to deal with life threatening situations if they happen to arise.
